Ignore risk; Maximize expected moral value

چکیده
Many philosophers assume that, when making moral decisions under uncertainty, we should choose the option that has greatest expected value, regardless of how risky it is. But their arguments for maximizing value do not support over rival, risk-averse approaches. In this paper, I present a novel argument value: think about larger series each decision is part of, all but most agents would prefer consistently with highest value. To extent what on given occasion be guided by entire choices prefer, then occasion,

Why Contextual Preference Reversals Maximize Expected Value
Contextual preference reversals occur when a preference for one option over another is reversed by the addition of further options. It has been argued that the occurrence of preference reversals in human behavior shows that people violate the axioms of rational choice and that people are not, therefore, expected value maximizers. In contrast, we demonstrate that if a person is only able to make...
متن کاملSequential Sampling to Myopically Maximize the Expected Value of Information
Statistical selection procedures are used to select the best of a finite set of alternatives, where “best” is defined in terms of each alternative’s unknown expected value, and the expected values are inferred through statistical sampling. One effective approach, which is based on a Bayesian probability model for the unknown mean performance of each alternative, allocates samples based on maxim...
متن کاملReappraisal and expected value modulate risk taking.
Decision making is informed by appraisals of appetitive cues and their associated opportunities for rewards. Such appraisals can be modulated by cognitive regulation strategies in order to promote goal-directed choices. Little is known about how cognitive regulation strategies, especially reappraisal, alter risk taking during decision making. To characterise the effect of reappraisal on risk ta...
متن کاملValue at Risk and Expected Stock Returns
This paper provides empirical evidence that firm size, liquidity, and Value-at-Risk (VaR) explain the cross-sectional variation in expected returns, while market beta and total volatility have almost no power to capture the cross-section of expected returns at the firm level. The strong positive relation between average returns and VaR turns out to be robust across different investment horizons...
متن کاملExpected value of fuzzy variable and fuzzy expected value models
This paper will present a novel concept of expected values of fuzzy variables, which is essentially a type of Choquet integral and coincides with that of random variables. In order to calculate the expected value of general fuzzy variable, a fuzzy simulation technique is also designed. Finally, we construct a spectrum of fuzzy expected value models, and integrate fuzzy simulation, neural networ...
